Listening sessions: Congo Beat The Drum

On the 22nd May, Listening Sessions & Club PST will be showcasing a documentary, ' Congo Beat The Drum '. It's an exclusive screening and there will be some live music on the evening from Kalbata who also directed the film. This is something new for the regular Listening Sessions crowd who are normally used to hearing Birmingham's finest underground music. The guys behind Listening Sessions (Goosensei & Elkie) are doing something different and interesting and so I asked a couple of questions to find out how it all came about. FPZ:  What's the event about? G-Sensei: I have been a fan of Kalbata's music since I first heard 'Ninja We Ninja' in 2009. This was pretty soon after I started to develop an interest in producing electronic music and wanting to DJ. Then one of the 1st records I bought after I became hooked on vinyl was 'Play Music Selecta', out on Soul Jazz, and this was a collaboration between Kalbata & Mixmonste...

Music to Check Out

Here is a selection of music I have come across that I am really feeling. I keep telling myself I'm not into Drum and Bass and I don't really play much of it, but funnily enough a few of the tracks below are of that style!  Please take the time to read and check them out….. JUSTICE/METRO/MOMENTUM - LT10/INTUNE A few weeks ago I interviewed, Justice, for the blog and he mentioned a new MJAZZ release from Metro, Momentum and himself. It's a 2 tracker and both tracks are around 10 minutes long!  LT10 / Intune by Justice/Metro/Momentum I listened to them in my car on the way to work in the morning when the sun was shining down - it was the perfect sound track for my ride. Both tracks have only a handful of elements (breakbeat, bass, melody, sound fx), it's the arrangement of them which makes the tracks really standout. Anyone can make a 10 minute track and call it 'epic', but there is a skill in being able to do this well - these tracks definitely disp...

Interview with Justice

For anyone who hasn't heard of Justice, he has been involved in music since the early nineties. His musical output covers a host of genres such as hardcore/rave, jungle/DnB, nu jazz/broken beat, house/techno and hip-hop/beats. Personally, what I find interesting about Justice is that although he has released some timeless classics, he doesn't rely on that success. Plus he's a really down to earth guy willing to give advise :) The last time I interviewed Justice was in 2013 for Futurepast Zine #4. A lot has happened since then, so below is a short interview, and also he has provided an awesome mix to listen to: Justice mix for Futurepast Zine by Futurepastzine on Mixcloud FPZ:  What have you been up to since the last time I interviewed you for the zine? I know you've set up 'Muj beats', how did that come about? JUSTICE:  MUJ came about as an outlet for putting out a beat tape that I was really enjoying at the time. It was from a friend of mi...

Krytikal Interview & Mix

I first had the pleasure of meeting Krytikal at the 'Movement' night at Club PST (Digbeth), and then at various places including the Listening Sessions events. He's been a supporter of the zine and has contributed tracks for various Futurepast Zine projects. His productions are meticulous, I seriously mean that, he's got a high standard of production in the music that he makes. His initial releases were solo, but recently he has worked with 'Goosensei' and also 'Yilan'. His music has been released on labels such as Area Recordings, and his tracks have been aired on the notorious Rinse FM a few times too. (Photography courtesy of B Harvey Photography  https://www.facebook.com/BHarveyPhotography ) While listening to Krytikal's mix, you can also read this short interview: 1. Who are you? And, how did you get into making music, dj’ing, etc… My name is Dane, and I make music and occasionally DJ under the monikor Krytikal. I purchaced my ...

Random stuff...

I've got a few things I wanted to mention for this blog post, a mixture of tunes, events and stuff…. Tunes Snakes & Ladders 3 A few weeks back I listened to a show on www.jungletrain.net  it was the Skutta Records show and there were a lot of mashed up breakbeat type tunes. I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff :-) The guys involved also played at Amusement 13 for a Listening Sessions event and they rocked it to the max. Anyway, I heard about a compilation album that featured tunes of that type of style ('mashed up breakbeat' haha). The album is called 'Snakes & Ladders 3' , I think it will appeal to fans of Rupture (a club night based in London) and Scientific Wax Records . The compilation features 25 tracks! And everyone is pretty much a killer track too. I've only had it a few days so it's difficult to determine a favourite just yet, but I noticed a track called 'Amen Guidance' by Rumbleton which I remember hearing at Rupture...

Interview with Fushara

Fushara has been a supporter of the zine since it's first issue way back in 2010. Last year sometime he sent me a batch of tracks which I thought were absolutely awesome (they still haven't been released - yet!). I noticed that there seemed to be a change in the music he made, it felt like it was more techno influenced. I've been listening out for his music since then, he released an album on Omni Music in November 2014 (http://omnimusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-ohm-series-fushara-test-one-lthe-ohm-series-fushara-test-one-lp). Once again the music very techno influenced and almost tribal. Recently I was lucky enough to check out his latest album 'A Wasteland of Memories'. It's a masterpiece. I heard the music and I thought I had to definitely find out a bit more about the person behind the music…… Who are you? Tell me a bit about yourself, and describe yourself with 3 Youtube/Vevo videos. Full name is Thushara Goonewardene, I was born in London, I ...
